Political scientist Dr. Richard Amoako Baah has expressed his belief that former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen stands a chance of winning the 2024 presidential election if he puts in the required effort. Speaking on Nhyira FM's "Kuro yi mu nsem" show with host Nana Jantuah, Dr. Amoako Baah stated that he anticipates Ghanaians opting for a different alternative this time around.
According to Dr. Amoako Baah, Ghanaians have two options for selecting a president in 2024, neither of which he views as ideal. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the two major parties, stating, "We don't need the NPP and the NDC again. They have destroyed governance." He highlighted the frequency of IMF interventions, stressing that Ghana has sought IMF assistance 17 times, with a possible 18th occurrence projected in 2025. In his view, this indicates a fundamental flaw in leadership and a lack of progressive thinking, with elections having devolved into popularity contests.
Dr. Amoako Baah explained that Alan Kyerematen had little choice but to resign from the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He suggested that Mr. Kyerematen's political career would have come to an end had he not secured the flagbearership and the NPP failed to win in 2024. Dr. Amoako Baah further noted that Ghanaians may prefer Alan over other presidential candidates due to disappointment with both the ruling government and the opposition party. Since Alan has not held executive office before, he could be seen as a favorable choice in the eyes of the electorate.
Alan Kyerematen had previously resigned from the New Patriotic Party following the 2007 presidential primaries, during which he contested against Nana Akufo-Addo. He raised concerns about the process, similar to his current stance, and later returned to the party after being assured that his concerns would be addressed. However, he has now chosen to resign once more and declare his intention to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential election in Ghana.
Dr. Richard Amoako Baah's analysis offers insights into the evolving political landscape in Ghana and the potential for a new alternative candidate like Alan Kyerematen to gain traction in the upcoming elections. The final outcome will ultimately be determined by the choices and preferences of the Ghanaian electorate.
