Honorable Sarah Adwoa Safo, Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency |
The Member of Parliament for the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has publicly expressed her sincere apologies to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its key figures, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, for her recent behavior.
Mrs. Safo made it clear that her actions were unintentional and were a result of personal challenges she was facing, both as an individual and as a member of a family. In acknowledging her wrongdoing, the former Deputy Majority Leader sought forgiveness from the Majority Caucus as well as from the party's regional and constituency executives.
She took the opportunity to express her remorse in a two-minute video address to the nation, which she published on her Facebook page. In her message, she urged all her constituents to forgive her for her behavior.
It's worth noting that in 2022, Adwoa Safo faced the Privileges Committee of Parliament following her absence for over a year. Her seat's status became a point of contention, with some fellow Majority members advocating for it to be declared vacant, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs opposed this.
As of now, the Speaker of Parliament has yet to make a ruling based on the committee's report.
Following her return to Ghana from the United States of America, the former Minister of Procurement expressed her intention to participate in the party's primaries for the 2024 elections.
While it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold and what decision the Speaker of Parliament will make regarding her seat, Mrs. Safo's public apology signifies her recognition of any wrongdoing and her desire for reconciliation with the NPP and her constituents.
Only time will tell how this apology and the events surrounding it will ultimately impact her political future within the party.
