The Minister of National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah, has taken legal action against Mawuse Oliver Barker-Vormawor following an allegation of attempted bribery made against him. Mr. Kan-Dapaah filed the lawsuit on Tuesday, September 26, through his lawyers, seeking a declaration that the words spoken by the defendant, as outlined below or similar, are defamatory towards him.
The allegation made by Barker-Vormawor states, "They went as far as offering us US$1 Million, they offered us a Committee Appointment, set up a Committee and appoint us to Government positions in order to stop this activism. This was made directly to me and other leaders of the fix the Country Movement. This conversation we had with the Minister of National Security, the Minister of Finance, and a Brigadier General at a safe home."
The Minister of National Security is pursuing remedies in the form of a retraction and an apology from Barker-Vormawor. In addition, he is seeking the recovery of ten million Ghana Cedis (GH¢10,000,000.00) in general damages, which may include aggravated and/or exemplary damages for defamation due to the words uttered by the defendant.
Legal cases involving defamation often seek to protect the reputation of individuals from false statements that harm their character or standing in the public eye. The outcome of this lawsuit will depend on the court's examination of the evidence and the application of defamation laws in Ghana.
It's important to note that in cases like this, both parties have the right to present their arguments and provide evidence to support their claims. The court will carefully consider these submissions before reaching a decision.
