This morning, a tumultuous situation unfolded at the Ofankor Timber Market in Accra as a group of impassioned young individuals, primarily traders, voiced their grievances. They asserted that they had rented the space and dutifully made regular payments.
In the early hours, occupants were reportedly subjected to harassment by armed individuals believed to be sent by the landowners. These individuals referred to as land guards, abruptly disrupted the peace of the market.
This sudden intrusion resulted in widespread chaos, with affected residents constructing substantial barriers and setting tires ablaze to express their dissatisfaction. Tragically, one resident lost their life, while others sustained injuries and were promptly taken to the hospital, according to an account given to JoyNews.
The aggrieved tenants emphasized that there are lawful avenues for the landowners to pursue if eviction is their intention, rather than resorting to violence and aggression.
As tensions escalated, law enforcement was called to the scene. Their intervention proved pivotal in reinstating order and stability in the area. In a subsequent social media update, the police confirmed that the incident stemmed from a dispute over land rights. The police force assured that a thorough investigation into the matter is currently underway.
