In a distressing incident on Thursday, September 14, two
fishing boats capsized in an estuary while trying to enter the Volta River,
leading to the reported disappearance of seven fishermen.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Ada has officially
confirmed the incident. According to their reports, the ill-fated boats had a
total of 19 individuals on board when the incident occurred. Fortunately, 12 of
them were rescued from the turbulent waters.
Dan-Doe, the Public Relations Officer of Ada East NADMO, identified the two
boats involved as 'Shalorm' and 'Barcelona.' He provided further details,
stating that the boats had gone out for fishing and were returning when they
encountered a sudden tidal wave, causing both vessels to capsize.
Of the eleven individuals on board the first boat, 'Shalorm', ten have been
located and are safe, leaving one person still unaccounted for. As for the
second boat, eight individuals were on board, with two being located and
rescued. Unfortunately, six individuals from the second boat are still missing.
NADMO, in collaboration with the Navy and the local community search team, is
actively involved in ongoing efforts to locate the missing fishermen. They are
utilizing their resources and expertise to conduct a thorough search in the
hopes of finding these individuals and bringing them to safety.
Such incidents serve as a reminder of the risks and dangers faced by fishermen
while at sea. The authorities and local communities are dedicated to doing
everything possible to support the search and rescue operations. Let us keep
the missing fishermen and their families in our thoughts, hoping for their safe
return.
