Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Ghana Armed Forces |
In recent times, coup d’état has become rampant in African countries as most African countries have resorted to coup d’état as their means of doing away with what they term bad leadership. For instance, Gabon and Niger recently overthrew their leaders in a coup. In line with this, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, the chief of the Defence Staff has come out to assure Ghanaians that the Ghana Armed Forces will continue in its mandate to protect the country’s constitution as well as the will of the people.
During a visit from the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama mentioned that the Ghana Armed Forces will not engage in any activity that will jeopardize the peace and stability of the country. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the countries that have resorted to coup d’état. He went on to mention that the duty of the armed forces is to protect the territorial integrity of the country and not to govern the country hence; the Ghana armed forces have no hands in any rumor of coup d’état we hear. He acknowledged the role of the media in security but further advised the media to confront them before sending out information to the public as failure to do that creates fear among the public. He encouraged the media to focus on positive stories about the GAF, as there is not only negative news but also positive developments that deserve attention.
GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, acknowledged the growing relationship
between the military and the media, which has contributed to the country's
democratic growth. He assured the GAF of the GJA's commitment to strengthening
this bond and expressed readiness to engage with the military leadership on a
regular basis.
