President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has received and commissioned 105 militarized vehicles for Ghana's security agencies. The vehicles, valued at €20 million, were donated by the European Union (EU) and will be used to enhance the country's efforts in securing its northern borders against terrorists. The equipment includes intelligence and surveillance tools, military engineering resources, explosive ordnance disposal equipment, and electronic warfare systems.
During the commissioning ceremony in Accra, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the increasing threat of terrorism and extremist groups in the Sahel region and their potential to expand their influence to coastal West Africa. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among nations facing this challenge and expressed gratitude for the support from partners like the EU.
The President stated that Ghana recognized the significance of the donated vehicles in fortifying its northern frontiers against terrorist incursions. He assured the EU of Ghana's commitment to utilizing the resources for their intended purpose and expressed readiness to continue collaborating with the EU to safeguard mutual security interests in the West African region.
President Akufo-Addo commended the ministers of National Security, Defence, and Foreign Affairs, as well as their staff, for their hard work in securing this donation. He also mentioned his discussions with the President of the European Council about the need for increased cooperation in Ghana's fight against terrorism.
The Minister of National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah, acknowledged the fruitful engagements with EU counterparts and expressed confidence in Ghana's leadership role in combating terrorism. He highlighted the personal commitment of EU Vice-President Josep Borrell Fontelles and emphasized the significance of this partnership in strengthening cooperation between Ghana and the EU.
Overall, the reception and commissioning of these militarized vehicles signify a significant step forward in Ghana's efforts to enhance its security measures and counterterrorism capabilities.
