The Vice-President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has inaugurated a $150 million investment project aimed at providing critical infrastructure in 48 districts across six regions. The project encompasses various initiatives, including the provision of water, construction of school buildings, healthcare facilities, markets, earth dams, and other essential physical infrastructure. It falls under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) initiative and is expected to be completed by 2025.
The launch of this project reflects a proactive response by the Ghanaian government to address the potential spillover of fragility, conflict, and violence from the Sahel region to the northern border areas. During the ceremony held in Yendi, Dr. Bawumia underscored the government's commitment to enhancing the welfare of all citizens, particularly those residing in communities vulnerable to fragility, which poses a threat to their sustainable socio-economic growth and development.
According to the Vice-President, the SOCO project will provide socio-economic community-level climate-resilient infrastructure, skills development, and training opportunities for youth, women, and vulnerable individuals. As of now, the project has already generated employment for 434 community facilitators and other specialists. When executed efficiently and effectively, it will not only improve access to basic social and economic services but also support local economic development, gender equality, and environmental management.
Dr. Bawumia expressed his enthusiasm about the commencement of the 15 physical projects in the Yendi municipality, signaling the initiation of construction for all 582 projects under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) project. He emphasized that the necessary funding for the project is readily available, and proper disbursement to contractors has been ensured to facilitate timely execution. The Yendi Municipal Assembly has already received its allocation to commence work. Furthermore, the Vice-President urged all implementing agencies, both at the national and sub-national levels, to avoid any delays in project implementation.
