Reverend Father Edwin Gathang'i Waiguru, an ordained Kenyan Catholic priest, has chosen to depart from the Catholic tradition of celibacy for priests by deciding to get married. Father Waiguru has joined a splinter group called the Catholic Charismatic church, which allows priests to marry.

Bishop Patrick Mulau of the Kirinyaga Charismatic Church conducted the wedding ceremony on Sunday in Kiambu country, situated just north of the capital, Nairobi. Standing alongside his bride, Margaret Wanjira Githui, Father Waiguru expressed that it is indeed possible to serve God, have a family, and enjoy the companionship of a lovely wife.

Father Waiguru highlighted that when God created man and woman, He intended for them to be together and not be alone. He explained that after being sent to preach in North and South America, he felt an inherent need to embrace both marriage and family life. Upon returning to Kenya, Father Waiguru decided to marry in a traditional ceremony, and he and Margaret were blessed with two children.

While breaking away from the traditional Catholic practice of celibacy, Father Waiguru has been ordained again as a Charismatic priest, successfully aligning his spiritual calling with his desire to marry. In this manner, he believes he has fulfilled his priestly calling to its fullest extent. Expressing his happiness, Father Waiguru made a heartfelt promise to his wife, vowing to love her always.

NTV reports that the ceremonious event was witnessed by hundreds of friends and family who eagerly gathered to celebrate this unique union. It showcases the diversity and individual expressions of faith within the broader Catholic community.

It is worth noting that the issue of celibacy within the Catholic Church has been a topic of discussion and debate for many years. It is a practice deeply rooted in tradition, with the aim of priests dedicating themselves fully to their priestly duties and the service of God. Nevertheless, there have been exceptions and different interpretations of this tradition throughout history, such as in the Eastern Catholic Churches where married priests are permitted.
