Fred Leparan, an employee at Nairobi's Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital, has been sentenced to 25 years in jail for selling a baby on the black market. Leparan was caught in a BBC Africa Eye investigation, where he was filmed accepting $2,500 to sell a baby boy under the hospital's care.
Leparan, who worked as a senior clinical social worker at the government-run hospital, was approached by an undercover reporter posing as a potential buyer. Despite only asking cursory questions about the buyer's situation, Leparan agreed to sell the baby boy.
On the day the baby boy and two other children were supposed to be transferred to a state-run children's home, Leparan falsified the transfer paperwork to make it appear that only two children were being transferred. The BBC team ensured that all three children were delivered to the children's home, but filmed Leparan amending the paperwork and informing the buyers that the child was theirs to take away.
Leparan was arrested in 2020 and found guilty last month of child trafficking, child neglect, and conspiracy to commit a crime. The Kenyan court has sentenced him to 25 years in prison, followed by 10 years on probation.
