Lawyer Akoto Ampaw Passes Away

It is with sadness that we share the news of the demise of Private Legal Practitioner Akoto Ampaw. He died at a medical facility after a short illness. According to sources close to his family, he was undergoing treatment and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit when his condition worsened.

Akoto Ampaw was a respected and experienced lawyer who had spent many years at the renowned law firm Akufo-Addo Prempeh and Co. He had risen through the ranks to become a Partner at the firm, which was founded by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Edmund Prempeh.

Throughout his career, Akoto Ampaw handled several major cases that showcased his legal expertise. One notable case was John Dramani Mahama versus Electoral Commission and Nana Akufo-Addo, where he led a legal team defending President Akufo-Addo's victory in the 2020 Presidential Polls. This high-profile case involved the challenge of the election outcome by the National Democratic Congress 2020 Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

Another notable representation was when he famously defended Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the Convener of Fix the Country, who faced charges of Treason Felony. This particular case highlighted Akoto Ampaw's commitment to human rights, as he advocated for the rights of an individual accused of plotting to oust the President, despite working at the President's law firm.

In a significant case in 2010, Akoto Ampaw successfully argued for the dismissal of charges against former Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani and former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana @ 50 secretariat, Dr. Charles Wereko Brobbey. The charges were based on a Commission of Inquiry report that implicated them in causing financial loss to the state. Mr. Ampaw emphasized the irregularity of mounting a prosecution solely based on the findings of a Commission of Inquiry. This case has since become an important legal authority on Commissions of Inquiry and the legal effect of their conclusions.


Outside the courtroom, Akoto Ampaw was known as a passionate advocate for human rights. He frequently associated himself with organizations like the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development and other groups devoted to upholding fundamental freedoms. Recently, he joined a team of notable advocates in opposing the Anti-Gay bill that is currently being deliberated in parliament. His involvement in various human rights causes demonstrated his commitment to defending fundamental rights and liberties.

It is worth mentioning that in the early 1990s, Akoto Ampaw played a key role in the Movement for Freedom and Justice, an organization established by figures such as Prof Albert Adu-Boahen, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Kweku Baako, and Nana Akufo-Addo. The movement fought tirelessly for the restoration of democracy in Ghana during that period.

Affectionately known as "Che Che" by many, Akoto Ampaw's passing is a loss not only to the legal community but also to the country as a whole. His contributions to the field of law, his unwavering commitment to human rights, and his involvement in shaping Ghana's democracy will be remembered and celebrated.
