(Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare,)

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has reassured the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of robust security arrangements ahead of their presidential primaries on November 4. In a meeting held in Accra on October 26 between the NPP's elections committee, the Police, and officials from the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Dampare emphasized the importance of collaboration between the party and the Police to ensure a smooth and incident-free exercise.

Dr. Dampare affirmed that the Police would provide an "overdose of security" during the primaries, assuring the NPP that their efforts to maintain a secure environment would be excellent and awe-inspiring. He urged the party to support the Police in their work, highlighting the significance of everyone playing their roles effectively. This includes the Police carrying out their responsibilities, the EC conducting the elections, and voters freely participating in the process, while party agents also fulfill their duties.

Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye, Chair of the NPP's Elections Committee, called on the Police to apprehend and deal with anyone who disregards the rules of engagement during the primaries. He reaffirmed the party's commitment to upholding the law, emphasizing that even an internal meeting should be conducted within legal boundaries. He acknowledged the authority of the Police and the independence of the Electoral Commission in overseeing elections, stating that the NPP would adhere to the guidelines and regulations set forth by these institutions.

The guidelines for the presidential primaries, which will be held in all 276 constituencies across the country and at the Party Headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, have been released by the Presidential Elections Committee of the NPP. These guidelines outline the procedures and rules for the primaries, which aim to elect the party's presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 general election. The Electoral Commission will supervise the conduct of the elections and ensure transparency, freedom, and fairness. It is crucial that all persons, whether party officials or otherwise, adhere to the guidelines and respect the authority of the EC.

The security measures during the primaries lie exclusively with the police, and access beyond the security perimeters will be restricted to delegates, Presidential Elections Committee members, contestants, and their accredited agents. As the entity mandated by the National Council to oversee the organization of the primaries, the Party's Presidential Elections Committee will ensure the smooth execution of the process.

According to the committee, there will be no campaign activities, vote canvassing, or gatherings of party members for any purpose on the day preceding the voting day. In addition, delegates will not be allowed to camp, and accreditation will be constituency-specific. The media will be granted accreditation to cover the event. To ensure a smooth and orderly process, the committee outlined several rules for voters to follow. Voters are expected to enter the voting premises freely, with the physically challenged being allowed assistance if needed. Before entering the voting area, voters must wait to be cleared by the queue control team. It is prohibited for voters to wear any attire or display any materials that endorse a specific candidate, such as T-shirts, caps, or posters. Delegates will not be permitted to enter the voting booth in groups or pairs. The committee also specified that voting will take place in open spaces, allowing the public to witness the process. Only accredited individuals will be allowed within the voting perimeter, and once a delegate has cast their vote, re-entry into the voting area will not be permitted. Lastly, any individual found attempting to influence a delegate's voting decision will be removed by the police, as this is deemed an offense.
