The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a warning to the general public, specifically protesters, to refrain from using unauthorized military-pattern uniforms and accoutrements. The GAF expressed dismay over the increasing trend of individuals wearing military-style uniforms and equipment during demonstrations, in violation of the law.
In a statement, the GAF acknowledged the recent demonstrations in Accra organized by Democracy Hub and other groups, where some protesters and purported private security personnel were observed wearing military-pattern camouflage uniforms and other related items. The GAF raised concerns that such actions could lead to misconceptions, with individuals mistakenly associating these unauthorized individuals with GAF personnel. This has the potential to tarnish the reputation of the GAF.

It is important to note that the unauthorized use of military uniforms, equipment, and accoutrements is contrary to the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, which is still in force. This Decree explicitly states that only members of the Armed Forces of Ghana are allowed to wear or use military-related items. The GAF emphasized the illegality of these acts and stressed that they not only breach the law but also pose a security risk, as criminals may exploit such attire to impersonate military personnel and engage in unlawful activities.
The GAF asserted its commitment to maintaining public security and protecting the citizens and territorial integrity of Ghana. In this regard, the GAF declared its intention to take action against those found in violation of the law, stating that offenders would be arrested and subjected to the full force of the law. The GAF called for the cooperation of the general public in curbing the use of military uniforms and accouterments during future protests, seeking to prevent further unauthorized acts that may undermine public safety and tarnish the GAF's image.
