President Akufo-Addo has recently appointed three Court of Appeal Justices to fill vacancies on the Supreme Court bench in Ghana. These appointments come after the mandatory retirement of three Justices earlier this year, namely Justice Nene Abayeteye Ofoe Amegatcher in February 2023, former Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah in May 2023, and Justice Jones Dotse in June 2023.
The newly appointed Justices are Henry Anthony Cofie, Yaw Asare Darko, and Richard Agyei Frimpong. Their appointments have been referred to the Parliament's Appointments Committee for consideration and report by the First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu.
As a result, Parliament has been notified so that it can review and approve their candidacy for the Supreme Court bench.
The President included the nominations in a letter to the Speaker of Parliament. The letter's nominations are intended to help the Supreme Court reach its goal of having a full complement of judges on the bench by filling the vacancies.
The Supreme Court bench now comprises the Chief Justice and 13 other Justices. These appointments are significant as they contribute to the maintenance of a full and functional Supreme Court bench, ensuring that the highest court in the country can effectively carry out its duties and responsibilities.
