The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has decided to suspend its sit-down strike against the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Compliance and Manual-Policing Exercise. The association expressed its concerns over the exercise, referring to it as intimidating. Additionally, the traders conveyed their dissatisfaction with the implementation of the exercise without engaging the association.

During a press conference, Takyi Addo, the Head of Communications for the association, highlighted the reason behind the suspension. He stated that the withdrawal of the GRA and Customs personnel from their shops played a significant role in this decision. However, he cautioned that if the authorities deviate from their commitment to withdraw personnel, the traders will be compelled to resume their strike.

It is important to note that the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association clarifies its stance regarding the Electronic VAT policy. They are not opposing the concept of paying taxes. As responsible Ghanaian citizens, the traders expressed their willingness to contribute their fair share of taxes for the development of the nation. However, they insist on being included in the decision-making process and expect to be consulted rather than harassed, considering their role as traders in society.

Mr. Addo emphasized that the association's decision to suspend the strike is contingent upon the GRA personnel staying away from their shops. If the personnel were to return, the traders would resume their strike. Clear engagements and consultations between taxpayers and tax collectors are necessary to build trust and ensure the effective implementation of tax policies.

The GRA, in its quest to generate revenue for the state, has designed and implemented the value-added tax (VAT) policy. This policy includes innovative approaches to tax collection. As part of the implementation process, the GRA enlisted the assistance of staff and customs officers to monitor and collect revenue from the shops of the dealers in Abossey Okai.

The Abossey Okai traders expressed their disappointment, emphasizing that their leadership was blindsided by this decision. They view it as a blatant disregard for their authority and a lack of respect.
