The Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Joe Anokye, announced substantial progress in Ghana's preparations to embrace 5G wireless data communication for mobile carriers. Speaking at the 12th R.P. Baffour Memorial lectures organized by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Anokye shed light on the intricate steps underway to facilitate Ghana's entry into the realm of 5G technology.
Anokye ensured attendees that the necessary spectrum for 5G is readily available, underlining the importance of navigating the complex market dynamics to ensure equitable access to this crucial resource. Emphasizing the need for policies that govern the allocation of spectrum, he articulated the nuanced approach required to prevent monopolistic control over this transformative technology.

Addressing a pivotal question about the timeline for Ghana's connection to 5G services, Anokye stressed the importance of fortifying local internet services to facilitate widespread access to 5G. He highlighted the necessity of establishing Wi-Fi connectivity in communal spaces and establishing a robust fiber optic infrastructure to underpin the rollout of 5G services, underscoring how centralization can facilitate the realization of 5G connectivity.
Anokye drew attention to the current reliance on submarine cable landings for all internet traffic in Ghana, totaling 5.9 terabytes. Acknowledging the operational challenges inherent in this setup, he articulated plans to license additional submarine providers to mitigate the vulnerabilities associated with such singular dependencies. This strategic move aims to address anomalies and enhance the robustness of Ghana's internet infrastructure, thereby fortifying the national connectivity landscape.
