"Many Sectors Are Already Running 24 hours" – Bawumia To Mahama

(Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,)

During his tour of the north, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and Flagbearer of the NPP, took a critical stance on former President John Mahama's proposal to implement a "24-hour economy" if re-elected as President of Ghana. Dr. Bawumia expressed skepticism about the feasibility of such a policy, labeling it as inadequately conceived and signaling that many sectors of Ghana's economy—both public and private—are already operational round-the-clock.

Echoing his views before a vibrant audience in Tamale, Dr. Bawumia dismissed the concept of legislating a 24-hour economy, emphasizing its intrinsic presence across various spheres. He highlighted existing examples of incessant economic activity, citing hospitals, electricity availability, financial transactions, eateries, law enforcement, and security services as current entities functioning 24 hours a day.

Regarding the proposed 24-hour economy, Dr. Bawumia articulately stated, "A 24-hour economy cannot be legislated by government. Today, there are many businesses that are already working for 24 hours. So, what is this 24-hour economy that you want to bring? Operating 24 hours is an issue for businesses. If you'll make more money opening 24 hours, there is no law preventing you."

Dr. Bawumia then ventured into a comparative analysis, juxtaposing his policy initiatives as Vice President against Mr. Mahama's tenure in various leadership capacities. He underscored his contribution to innovative solutions and impactful policies, contrasting it with his perception of Mr. Mahama's policy impact. Notably, he cited the successful implementation of the government's Ghanacard policy, the establishment of a digital property address system, mobile money interoperability, enhancing healthcare services through Zipline drones, and the ambitious Agenda 111 project aimed at building hospitals in districts without healthcare facilities.
