NAM1 To Protest At UAE Embassy Over Compensation And Arrears

Nana Appiah Mensah, also known as NAM1, the former Chief Executive Officer of defunct gold dealership firm Menzgold, has revealed plans to organize a protest against the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at its embassies, including the one located in Ghana. In a post shared on X on Monday, November 20, 2023, NAM1 announced that the protest, expected to be attended by 2,000 people, is intended to demand a $30 million compensation for what he claims was his unlawful detention by the government of UAE.

Additionally, he indicated that the protest would also serve to demand outstanding arrears amounting to $43.8 million owed to him by an entity in the UAE. In his social media post, he rallied support, stating, "Brace up friends, for a 2,000-man protest at the UAE embassy in Ghana and elsewhere overseas SOON, to claim a USD$43.8 million dollars (750kg of Gold) owed me and another USD$30 million dollars as compensation, for my unjustifiable detention by the Dubai Police in 2018/2019."

NAM1 also shared various documents, including a letter dated June 11, 2018, addressed to Horizon Royal Diamond DMCC, a Dubai-based firm, demanding payment related to a gold purchase deal. These documents, which also included details of his arrest by the Dubai Police, were predominantly in Arabic.

The context of this announcement relates to NAM1's previous legal issues. It is noteworthy that on January 14, 2018, Assistant Commissioner of Police, David Eklu, confirmed the arrest of Nana Appiah Mensah by Dubai authorities in connection to a gold deal that reportedly encountered challenges. He mentioned, "His arrest in Dubai is to facilitate investigations into suspicions that he had been involved in a gold trading deal gone bad within the Emirati jurisdiction."
