NPA And GSA Collaborate To Revise National Gasoline Standards

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA), in tandem with the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), has launched an effort to revise the national standards for gasoline. This initiative aims to specifically lower the maximum permissible manganese level in regular gasoline from 18mg/l to 6mg/l and premium gasoline from 18mg/l to 2mg/l.

In a statement released by the Corporate Affairs Directorate of NPA, it was clarified that while the review process is ongoing, the NPA has instructed that all newly imported gasoline must adhere to the envisaged manganese standards of 6mg/l for regular gasoline and 2mg/l for premium gasoline grade.

The NPA's decision to revise the standards was prompted by grievances raised by certain petroleum product consumers regarding compromised vehicle performance attributable to fuel purchased at specific retail stations in Ghana. The NPA undertook an investigation into these complaints and underscored that all fuel consumed in the country adheres to the national standards for fuel specification established by the GSA.

The existing Ghana motor gasoline standard (GS 140:2022) permits trace amounts of manganese up to 18 milligrams per liter (mg/l). However, the statement emphasized that previous fuel imports had substantially lower levels of manganese. Nevertheless, recent fuel imports have approached the maximum allowable limit, prompting the revision of the standards.

The statement highlighted that certain car manufacturers, particularly those producing turbo engine vehicles, advocate for the use of gasoline devoid of detrimental manganese-based fuel additives. For instance, the manual for the 2017 model of the Honda CRV emphasizes this requirement.

Furthermore, it was noted that complaints about compromised performance primarily originated from gasoline vehicle users falling into the category of vehicles for which manufacturers recommend the use of fuel devoid of harmful manganese-based additives.

In closing, the NPA assured the petroleum product-consuming public of its steadfast commitment to safeguarding their interests in the ongoing review of gasoline standards and reiterated its dedication to ensuring fuel quality in line with evolving industry needs and environmental considerations.
