Roads Ministry Fixes Spoilt Traffic Lights, Calls On Police To Combat Vandalism

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has expressed deep concern regarding the surge in vehicular crashes, theft, and vandalism of traffic control infrastructure, particularly traffic lights. Following an inventory assessment of malfunctioning traffic lights nationwide, the Ministry has noted that a significant number of these incidents are attributed to vehicular accidents, theft, and deliberate vandalism, thereby necessitating replacements equivalent to the cost of installing new infrastructure. This has imposed an added financial burden on both the Ministry and taxpayers, requiring prompt restoration and timely maintenance of these critical systems.

In response to these challenges, the Ministry has initiated a comprehensive nationwide effort to reinstate malfunctioning traffic lights. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Ghana Police, the Ministry has commenced daily patrols at these locations, inviting the public to aid in reporting such occurrences promptly. Moreover, the Ministry, in partnership with the Ghana Police, is dedicated to ensuring that individuals responsible for damaging public road infrastructure face the full extent of the law, as stipulated in LI. 2180.

The Ministry has also emphasized the legal consequences of damaging public road infrastructure, citing Subsection 4 of Section 114 of the Road Traffic Regulation LI. 2180, which deems such actions as offenses. The public has been encouraged to provide information about individuals involved in damaging traffic lights, with the promise of a reward. Those with valuable information can call 0302773906, 0302787373, or the police command center number 191 (accessible on all networks).
