Don't Celebrate The Approval 2024 Budget Yet - Murtala Muhammad To Majority

Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the Tamale Central MP, has advised the Majority in Parliament against hasty celebration following the approval of the 2024 Budget and Economic Policy statement.

According to the NDC MP, the opposition from the Minority regarding the budget is far from settled. Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, Mr. Murtala Muhammed stressed that while the policy statement's approval is significant, the critical aspect lies in the approval of the budget's estimates, emphasizing the need for vigilance over the upcoming voting process for each component of the estimate.

Highlighting the potential challenges ahead, the MP expressed skepticism regarding the Majority's ability to ensure a consistent presence of ministers and other members in Parliament throughout December to secure the necessary votes.

This comes in the aftermath of Parliament's endorsement of the 2024 Budget and Economic Policy Statement, a decision that was garnered through a headcount orchestrated by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, in response to resistance from the Minority side.

Following the headcount, which revealed 138 Ayes, 136 Noes, and 1 absence, Mr. Murtala Muhammed underscored that the unexpected approval of the budget hasn't fundamentally altered the current situation. He highlighted the perceived political strategy of subjecting everything to a vote, despite lacking contention, which places a premium on ensuring a unified presence to surmount potential procedural hurdles.
