Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to reconsider its proposal to close polls at 3 pm instead of 5 pm during the upcoming 2024 general elections. The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs expressed concerns about the potential disenfranchisement of eligible voters.

Speaking on December 20, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu underlined the significance of upholding the 5 p.m. voting schedule during the EC budget approval debate. He recounted his encounter at the polls during the most recent district assembly elections, when he discovered that the voting materials were still missing.
"We should investigate the attempt to move the voting time from 5 p.m. to 3 p.m.," he said. I think the EC should wait to take action. I arrived at the polling place on Tuesday at 8:15, but the materials had not yet been assembled. I had to wait until 9:20 to begin voting, which ate up two hours of my time." In response, the EC has defended its decision to shift the closing time, with Chairperson Jean Mensa emphasizing that the adjustment is aimed at facilitating transparent and orderly collation of votes by electoral officers in broad daylight.
