A total of 7.5 tons of goods, including medicines—particularly tramadol—herbal remedies, and expired food items, were burned at the Gbalahi Landfill Site, which is outside of Tamale, as a safe disposal method. Throughout the course of six months, the discarded goods were taken from stores, marketplaces, and private sellers in the area.

Zakaria Braimah, the Head of FDA for the Northern Region, addressed journalists following the disposal exercise at Gbalahi, issuing a stern cautionary statement to the public. He emphasized the critical importance of vigilance and careful scrutiny of product expiry dates, particularly during the festive season. Braimah also advised against acquiring drugs from unauthorized sources, urging consumers to make purchases exclusively from pharmacies and approved chemical shops.

Highlighting the significance of consumer awareness, Braimah stressed, “In this festive season, don’t just enter the market and buy anything; be watchful and look at the expiry dates of the items. Consumers should be mindful of what they consume and what they buy in the market; and be mindful of their expiry dates.”

Assuring sustained vigilance, Braimah underlined the FDA's ongoing commitment to conducting surveillance activities to guarantee that only sanctioned and safe products are available for purchase within the region.

Moreover, he reiterated that individuals found selling unapproved or expired products would face sanctions, including the imposition of administrative charges, reinforcing the FDA's resolve to enforce regulatory standards.
