Minority Calls For Immediate Revocation Of Policy Requiring Public Hospitals To Pay Their Electricity Bills
The Minority in Parliament has intensified efforts to prompt an immediate reversal of a recent government directive, compelling public hospitals to settle their electricity bills utilizing their Internally Generated Fund (IGF). The outcry arises following revelations by Tain MP, Adama Sulemana, that the Tain District Hospital faced disconnection from the national power grid by the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO), owing over GH¢7 million.

The directive, which took effect on June 1, has resulted in substantial debts for numerous district hospitals, culminating in the disconnection of five health facilities within the Bono East region as part of NEDCO’s debt recovery initiative.

In response to these developments, MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, vehemently decried the new policy, underlining the need for its immediate reversal. Ablakwa emphasized the critical need for health facilities to be exempted from disconnections, particularly highlighting the impact on critical medical equipment such as incubators, crucial for the survival of preterm babies. He stressed that the policy, implemented in June 2023, is unprecedented in the country's history, and its reversal is imperative to safeguard human life and the fundamental right to life.

Adama Sulemana, further highlighting the precarious situation faced by the Tain District Hospital and other district hospitals, urged Parliament to compel the government to bear the electricity costs to prevent further power disconnections.
