In a press statement released on Wednesday, January 3, SML welcomed the audit directive and pledged complete cooperation. The company anticipates that the audit's findings will underscore the legitimacy and effectiveness of its engagements with the GRA and the Ministry of Finance. SML reiterated its commitment to upholding the highest business standards and expressed readiness for the scrutiny the audit will bring.

In the statement, SML expressed its confidence in the audit's ability to validate the company's collaboration with the GRA and the Ministry of Finance, emphasizing the potential for the findings to provide substantial evidence of the value SML delivers to citizens.

This audit was ordered by President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, January 2, with KPMG mandated to complete the audit within a two-week timeframe. The specific terms of reference for the audit were outlined in a press release from the Presidency, communicated by Director of Communications, Eugene Arhin.

The move for this audit follows an investigative report published in December 2023 by The Fourth Estate, which implicated SML, the Ghana Revenue Authority, and the Ministry of Finance. The report raised concerns about alleged underhand dealings related to a substantial 10-year contract generating $100 million annually.

SML promptly refuted these claims, clarifying that it had been awarded a 5-year contract and denied receiving $100 million annually pursuant to its contract. In response, the Ghana Revenue Authority issued a statement on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, affirming that due processes were followed in procuring SML's services.
