Koforidua to Host 67th National Independence Day Celebration

 


The 67th National Independence Day Celebration is set to be commemorated at the newly constructed Youth Resource Centre in Koforidua, the Eastern regional capital, on Wednesday, March 6. 

Themed "Our Democracy, Our Pride", the event was formally inaugurated in Koforidua and featured the unveiling of the anniversary logo.

Distinguished Attendees

The celebration will witness the presence of notable guests, with President Alassane Ouattara of Cote d'Ivoire serving as the esteemed Guest of Honour, with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo presiding over the festivities. The event will showcase 21 contingents from various security services, 11 schools from the Eastern Region, and assorted cultural groups.

Dignitaries in Attendance

High-profile figures expected at the event include former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Chief Justice Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Supreme Court Justices, 275 Members of Parliament, President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs Nene Sakite II, and all 11 paramount chiefs in the Eastern Region.


Broad Representation and Participation

Furthermore, diplomatic corps members from 120 countries, Council of State representatives, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), alongside diverse groupings from 16 regions, will add vibrancy and inclusivity to the occasion, showcasing a rich tapestry of cultural diversity.

Significance of Venue Rotation

Mr. Lord Commey, Director of Operations at the Presidency and Chairman of the National Planning Committee, remarked on President Akufo-Addo's decision in 2017 to decentralize the independence celebration venue from solely being in Accra to enhance regional economies and showcase their unique cultural heritage to international audiences.

Optimism for a Memorable Occasion

The Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, expressed optimism about the economic and cultural benefits of hosting the national event in the region, underscoring the meticulous preparations made to ensure a successful and memorable celebration. He implored various stakeholders, including community leaders, youth organizations, traders, and artisans, to actively engage in making the event a resounding success and contributing to the region's flourishing heritage and economy.
