Water Supply Disruptions in Kumasi due to Frequent Power Cuts - GWCL

The Ghana Water Company (GWC) has identified the root cause of the inconsistent water supply in the Greater Kumasi Metropolis, attributing the issue to the unstable power supply affecting key water treatment plants in the Ashanti Region.

GWC highlighted that three critical water supply stations, namely the Barekese and Owabi Water Treatment Plants, along with the Achiase Booster Station, have recently grappled with power disruptions from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

These interruptions have significantly hampered the production and distribution of potable water to various areas within the Greater Kumasi Metropolis, leading to widespread challenges for residents.

Expressing concern over the adverse effects on water distribution, the water company's management has officially communicated the challenges to the ECG. GWC emphasized the essential role of a stable power supply in ensuring continuous water provision to their esteemed customers and the general public. The company looks to the ECG to rectify the power supply issues promptly to facilitate uninterrupted water services in the region, expressing regret for any inconveniences caused by the prevailing circumstances.

Communities like Atonsu-Agogo, Bantama, Abrepo, among others, have been grappling with water scarcity, prompting residents to resort to alternative water sources such as boreholes, underground water, and private water vendors at increased costs. The situation has compelled individuals to adapt their daily routines, prioritizing water use for essential tasks like cooking and washing, while bearing the challenges posed by the disrupted water supply.

Despite the ongoing challenges, GWC assures the public of a swift resumption of water supply post power restoration by the ECG. Emphasizing the importance of judicious water consumption during this period, the company urges residents to use water efficiently until normal supply conditions are reinstated.
