Chief Imam Commends Passage of Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

 


The approval of the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ legislation by Parliament has garnered praise from Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, as revealed by his spokesperson in a recent disclosure.

Following nearly three years of deliberation, Parliament officially passed the anti-LGBTQ+ bill on February 28, 2024. The bill introduces stringent measures, including a potential prison sentence of up to three years for individuals associated with LGBTQ+ identities. Moreover, advocacy or financial support by LGBTQ+ organizations could lead to a maximum five-year imprisonment under the legislated provisions.

While eliciting debate and dissent from some civil society groups and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) over concerns of potential violations of fundamental human rights, Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu perceives this legislative milestone as advancement.

During an appearance on JoyNews' Newsfile on March 2, spokesperson Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu conveyed the Chief Imam's satisfaction with the bill's approval, highlighting the Muslim community's endorsement of the legislation due to its alignment with core family values.


Emphasizing the moral and societal implications, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu expounded on the Chief Imam's standpoint, affirming that practices detrimental to family stability are strongly rebuked within their religious framework.
