Ghana Police Service Disseminates Cybercrime Units To All 25 Police Units

In order to enhance its capabilities and improve its services, the Ghana Police Service has undergone a comprehensive reorganization of the cybercrime unit (CU) at the CID Headquarters. This reorganization is part of the police service's transformation agenda.

As part of this reorganization, the CU has been decentralized to all 25 police regional commands across the country. This move aims to bring the services of the CU closer to the public and ensure that they are easily accessible.

The strategic reorganization of the CU has positioned it as an expert unit that specializes in supporting criminal investigations through various services. These services include cyber forensic analysis, digital device forensic analysis, mobile and network forensic analysis, and digital content forensic analysis. Previously, the focus of the CU was primarily on general criminal investigations, such as building case dockets and directly handling suspects.

To facilitate the decentralization process, the Ghana Police Service has undertaken specialized training for 151 personnel. These trained personnel have been deployed to the 25 police regions across the country to assist with criminal investigations within their respective regions.

The training covered a wide range of critical areas, including digital wallet (mobile money) fraud, social engineering, insider threats, online scams, bank card fraud, file system forensics, and artifact analysis, as well as network and memory forensics.

The decentralization of the CU is in line with the broader goals of modernizing the police service and ensuring that it remains at the forefront of addressing emerging threats in the digital age. By bringing its services closer to the public and enhancing its capabilities in cybercrime investigation, the Ghana Police Service is taking proactive steps to combat cybercrime and protect the public.
