The National President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) led a delegation on a fact-finding mission to communities affected by the recent floods caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam. On Thursday, October 19, 2023, the delegation visited the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) and Somanya to assess the situation and show support to the affected communities.
The UTAG delegation was welcomed with open arms by the UTAG-UESD Executive upon arrival. The delegation was led by the local executives to visit the Vice-Chancellor of UESD as a gesture of goodwill. The National President thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the gracious welcome at the meeting and let him know that the goal of the trip was a fact-finding tour to the flood-affected areas. Additionally, he talked about the potential for UTAG to lead a thorough impact assessment to evaluate how the floods have affected livelihoods in these communities and beyond. The findings of such a study could aid in formulating evidence-based policies and decision-making in order to stop such calamities from happening again in the future.

The Vice-Chancellor of UESD warmly welcomed the delegation and commended UTAG for their initiative in visiting the affected communities. He pledged his support to UTAG in their efforts and emphasized that the association should be seen as actively involved in national development issues, including floods and policy advocacy, rather than solely focusing on member welfare.
Following the courtesy call, the UTAG delegation, accompanied by the UESD Branch Executive, visited the Attimpoku community, which had also been severely affected by the floods. Within the community, the delegation met with individuals and households impacted by the floods. This included an elderly woman who sells abolo, a pregnant teenager and her husband who lost their belongings and an unemployed young man whose house had collapsed.
