Current divisions in NPP orchestrated by Akufo-Addo when he was a candidate – Prof. Adu Gyamfi

During an appearance on TV3's Ghana Tonight, Prof. Samuel Adu-Gyamfi, a senior lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), weighed in on the reasons why the New Patriotic Party (NPP) may struggle to retain the presidential seat in the upcoming 2024 election.


Prof. Adu-Gyamfi echoed the sentiments expressed by Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the former Minister of Agriculture and a potential NPP flag bearer, who stated that the party is not in a favorable position to contest the election. According to Prof. Adu-Gyamfi, the NPP has not been able to meet the expectations of Ghanaians, leading to disappointment among the populace and a lack of enthusiasm to vote for the party.

Furthermore, Prof. Adu-Gyamfi highlighted the current divisiveness within the NPP. He mentioned that the party is experiencing internal conflicts, with some founding members holding grudges against the current leadership. He attributed this divisiveness to actions taken by President Akufo-Addo during his candidacy, leading to a fragmented party.

The political scientist also pointed out the existence of two prominent factions within the NPP, exemplified by the public disputes between the Ashanti regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), and the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who is also vying for the party's flag bearer position.

Prof. Adu-Gyamfi called on the National Executive Council of the NPP to address the concerns of party members regarding the growing disunity within the party. He emphasized the need for the leadership to address these issues to protect the party's image and ensure a united front moving forward.
