"Declare A State Of Emergency Amid Devastating Floods" - GNAT To Government

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has joined the chorus of voices calling for President Akufo-Addo to declare a state of emergency in areas severely affected by the floods caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam. According to GNAT, the situation meets the criteria for a state of emergency declaration, which would ensure the provision of essential goods and services to the affected victims.

In a press statement, GNAT expressed its strong support for the call to declare a state of emergency in the affected areas. The Association emphasized that the current circumstances, marked by natural disasters and their dire consequences, not only pose a threat to the people's existence but also deprive communities of basic necessities. GNAT urged its members in the affected communities to remain resilient and avoid any actions that could jeopardize their safety.

Numerous communities in the Volta and Eastern regions have suffered extensive devastation due to the floods resulting from the overflow of water from the Akosombo and Kpong hydro dams. These floods have submerged hundreds of homes and forced thousands of individuals to seek refuge. Additionally, the floods have swept away farms, which serve as the main source of livelihood for many affected communities.

The Electricity Company of Ghana and the Ghana Water Company Limited have both suspended services in these areas. The former has done so for safety reasons, while the latter has been impeded by the flooding, which has submerged their pumps and contaminated facilities.

The Assemblies of God Church, Ghana, has also joined the call for a state of emergency declaration. Reverend Stephen Wengam, the General Superintendent of the Church, emphasized the need to address the devastating consequences of the floods caused by the spillage of water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams. He highlighted the large-scale disaster affecting parts of the Volta, Eastern, and Greater Accra regions, with entire communities submerged, thousands displaced, and property worth millions of Ghana cedis lost. The floods have also polluted drinking water sources and created public health emergency concerns.

The controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams by the Volta River Authority (VRA) was initiated due to rising water levels in Volta Lake. Over the past week, the situation has worsened, leading the government and various stakeholders to mobilize relief items to alleviate the plight of the displaced victims.

The collective call for a state of emergency reflects the urgent need to address the humanitarian crisis caused by these devastating floods. The declaration would provide the necessary resources and support to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
