The Health Minister of Ghana, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, has disclosed that the government is exploring the possibility of subsidizing the cost of dialysis treatment for individuals suffering from kidney diseases. This announcement follows complaints by the Renal Patients Association of Ghana regarding the high cost of dialysis and treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) and other public health facilities.

Speaking at the 50th anniversary and Annual Congress of Medical Laboratory Scientists, Minister Agyeman-Manu highlighted that extensive consultations are underway to address the dialysis crisis. He informed attendees that he had reported the issue to the cabinet, and the cabinet was awaiting his proposal. The Minister expressed his engagement with the Kidney Association of Ghana and ongoing discussions with parliamentarians to gather various perspectives. The objective is to find a solution that could potentially involve incorporating dialysis treatment into the health insurance scheme or exploring other subsidy options. The government is also examining the health insurance framework to determine the most effective approach.

In response to concerns over the recent shortage of anti-retroviral drugs for HIV/AIDS patients, Minister Agyeman-Manu assured that similar incidents would not reoccur. To investigate the underlying causes of the drug shortage, a committee will be established.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists is advocating for the passage of legislation to establish a medical laboratory science council, which would regulate the profession of medical lab scientists nationwide. Additionally, the group is urging the Ministry of Health to establish a dedicated directorate at the national, regional, and district levels responsible for overseeing medical laboratory services.

These efforts by the government and professional associations signal a commitment to addressing the challenges in the healthcare sector. By exploring options to reduce the financial burden of dialysis treatment and proposing regulatory measures for medical laboratory scientists, the government aims to improve access to essential healthcare services and ensure the well-being of the population.
