According to Mustapha Salifu, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the recent increase in the price of dialysis treatment is due to the removal of tax exemptions and high import duties on dialysis products. Salifu explained that these changes have put a financial burden on the dialysis unit, and if the treatment price is not increased, the unit may be forced to shut down.

Salifu clarified that, after a thorough cost analysis, the actual cost of dialysis treatment is around GH₵850. Previously, the government covered some of these costs, but now the hospital has to bear the expenses themselves, including import duties previously paid by the government. The elimination of tax exemptions has further added to the financial strain.

Salifu emphasized that the purpose of the price increase is not to make a profit but rather to cover the actual cost of treatment. The hospital has tried to cushion the impact on patients by setting the price at GH₵765, which they deem manageable.

It is worth noting that in 2016, Dr. Adam Atiku of the Renal and Dialysis Unit at KBTH disclosed that the unit receives 20 new cases of kidney failure daily, 60 new cases per week, and provides dialysis treatment to 100 people every day.
