In a statement released on Wednesday, London's Luton Airport announced the suspension of all flights following a "significant" fire that broke out in the airport's Terminal 2 parking lot. The airport stated that it would remain closed until at least 3 p.m. local time, advising passengers not to travel to the airport.

Emergency services are currently present at the scene, addressing the aftermath of the fire that occurred on Tuesday night. The Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has scaled back its response, confirming that the fire is no longer a major incident. However, four firefighting crews and an aerial appliance are still stationed at the airport.

Chief Fire Officer Andy Hopkinson provided some insights into the incident. He estimated that approximately 1,500 vehicles were present in the car park when the fire originated. Hopkinson emphasized that there is no evidence to suggest anything other than an accidental cause for the fire. He believes that the fire started in one vehicle and subsequently spread throughout the car park.

Fortunately, only mild smoke inhalation occurred to four firefighters and a member of the airport staff team involved in addressing the fire. They have since been discharged from the hospital. Moreover, no harm befell any members of the public.

Earlier, Luton Airport stated that the fire resulted in a partial structural collapse. However, the airport's priority remains supporting the emergency services and ensuring the safety of passengers and staff. Passengers are urged to contact their respective airlines for further information regarding the status of their flights, keeping in mind that airport access is currently strictly limited.
