The military operation was reportedly triggered by an attack on their personnel by angry youth in the town of Garu. The Ministry of National Security deployed five counter-terrorism intelligence officers to Garu as part of a critical and specialized operation. However, an irate youth group armed with AK-47 rifles, machetes, and other weapons attacked the officers, resulting in gunfire exchange and the officers seeking shelter at the local police station. They were ultimately rescued by the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Ministry of National Security states that their subsequent operation, conducted in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, aimed to seize the weapons used in the attack and has led to the arrest of several perpetrators. The ministry strongly condemns any acts of violence, intimidation, or harm towards officials of State Security and Intelligence Agencies, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding peace and stability in Ghana.

The situation in Garu town is concerning, with reports of violence and mass displacement. Efforts should be made by relevant authorities to address these issues promptly, ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
