In a historic move, the House of Representatives has made the decision to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, from his position. The vote was conducted this afternoon, resulting in a 216-210 majority in favor of McCarthy's removal, with a small number of conservatives joining Democrats in support. Seven members were absent during the vote.
This marks the first time in the history of the United States that a speaker of the House has been voted out of office. With McCarthy's removal, the path is now cleared for a new leader to assume the role of speaker.

Earlier in the day, McCarthy informed House Republicans that he would not seek re-election for the position of speaker, further solidifying the need for a new leader to be chosen.
Prior to the vote on McCarthy's removal, his supporters attempted to halt the efforts by pushing for a vote to dismiss Representative Matt Gaetz's motion. However, this attempt was unsuccessful, as nearly a dozen Republicans joined forces with all House Democrats to keep the issue alive.
Following these developments, the House plans to adjourn for a week and will hold a speaker election next Wednesday to determine the individual who will assume the role of speaker.
