Marina Ovsyannikova, a former Russian state TV editor and Kremlin critic, has been sentenced in absentia to eight and a half years in prison by a Moscow court. The Basmanny District Court found her guilty of disseminating false information about the Russian army, according to state news agency TASS.

The charges stem from Ovsyannikova's protest near the Kremlin in July 2022, where she held a poster criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin and the actions of the Russian soldiers. She was initially placed on pre-trial house arrest but later fled to Europe with her daughter, which led to her being added to the Kremlin's wanted list.

Ovsyannikova gained international attention in March of last year when she denounced Moscow's war on Ukraine during a live Russian TV broadcast. She stormed the set of Russia's top evening newscast with a poster calling for an end to the war and accusing the government of lying.

After fleeing Russia, Ovsyannikova worked for Germany's Die Welt newspaper before returning to Russia to fight for custody of her child. She eventually escaped with her daughter and is currently believed to be residing in France, according to social media posts and reports.
