The Volta River Authority (VRA) has allocated GH¢9 million from a total of GH¢20 million to mitigate the challenges faced by 36,000 people displaced by the recent flooding caused by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams. The VRA has intensified its efforts to alleviate the suffering and discomfort of those affected by the floods.
During a press briefing in Accra, Ken Arthur, the Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Services at the VRA, expressed gratitude that there had been no loss of life in the affected areas. He highlighted the various steps taken by the VRA to support the displaced individuals and communities.
To address the immediate needs of the affected people, the VRA and the relief team have been consistently supplying food items, including rice, maize, beans, gari, sugar, mackerel, cooking oil, palm oil, tomato paste, groundnuts, biscuits, fruit juice, powdered milk, and drinking water. Additionally, non-food relief items such as mosquito repellent creams, mosquito nets, blankets, mattresses, solar-powered lanterns with telephone charging features, sanitary items, and more have been provided.

Regarding essential services, the VRA has deployed water tankers to ensure a continuous supply of water to the affected areas. The authority has also provided medical items and personnel to address emerging health issues, and transportation support in the form of buses, trucks, and pick-up vehicles for both goods and transportation of affected individuals.
Furthermore, the VRA has restored damaged water supply pumps in Aveyime, installed a potable water treatment system at the St. Kizito School (a safe haven in Mepe), and collaborated with the Ministry of Energy to distribute 5,000 solar lamps to the various camps. The power supply has been reconnected at the St. Kizito safe haven in Mepe, thanks to joint efforts with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
To ensure sanitation and hygiene, Zoomlion has been contracted to provide mobile toilets, sanitation services, and regular maintenance at the safe havens. Access roads have been created in Mepe to the St. Kizito center for easier transportation.
In addition, efforts have been made to facilitate the natural flow of the river by clearing weeds from the Sogakope bridge.

Dr. Ebenezer Tagoe, the Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Finance at the VRA, disclosed that, so far, GH¢9 million has been spent on the procurement of food items and other necessary supplies.
NADMO's Public Relations Officer, George Ayisi, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the VRA in supporting the flood victims.
