In response to reports claiming that soldiers deployed to Mepe in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region had abandoned their duty post while providing support to flood victims, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a statement denying these claims.

Various media reports had suggested that military personnel stationed in the area had withdrawn, leading to concerns about the support being provided to the affected communities. Member of Parliament for the area, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, also raised the issue on social media, questioning the treatment of the people in the area.

However, the Ghana Armed Forces, in a statement signed by its Director General in charge of Public Relations, M.A Larbi Naval Captain, announced that the information circulating was inaccurate. The statement clarified that military personnel had not received any orders to withdraw from Mepe or any other communities affected by the flooding caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.

The Ghana Armed Forces explained that the relief operations were being carried out in different phases, and as the situation in Mepe had been brought under considerable control, attention was redirected to other communities such as Battor. The operations, known as "Operation Boafo," involve the Ghana Navy's Riverine Command and the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Army.

The statement emphasized that the Ghana Armed Forces remained committed to providing urgent, equitable, and appropriate support to all individuals and communities affected by the flooding, working in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. The Armed Forces assured the public that efforts were ongoing to assist those impacted by the spillage.

Confirming the return of the soldiers to their duty posts, the MP for North Tongu in a post on twitter (now X) acknowledged that the initial order for withdrawal had been reversed. He emphasized the need for empathy and justice for the over 12,000 displaced constituents affected by the flooding, emphasizing that they did not deserve their current predicament caused by the spillage.

The Ghana Armed Forces' prompt response and clarification aim to address the concerns surrounding the deployment of military personnel and ensure continued support for the affected communities. As the relief efforts progress, collaboration among stakeholders will play a crucial role in providing the necessary resources and assistance to those impacted by the flooding.
