The delay in the reconstruction of the La General Hospital in Accra has been attributed to the withholding of funds by the sponsors of the facility, according to Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu. He stated that the sponsors withheld the funds after Ghana entered into an engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained that funding from approved sources has been withheld by the sponsors due to Ghana's engagement with the IMF, and until the nation receives a clean bill of health from the IMF, it will be difficult for the funding to be released. He also mentioned that the government is considering situating the project within the context of Agenda 111, which may require scaling down the facility.
The La General Hospital was demolished in July 2020 due to severe structural problems, and President Akufo-Addo had inaugurated the commencement of construction for the redevelopment project in August 2020. However, work on the reconstruction has not yet begun.
