Korle Bu Renal Unit Finally Reopens; Management Demands Parliament's Approval Of Proposed Dialysis Cost

Despite reopening, the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital's management is pleading with Parliament to quickly approve newly proposed renal unit fees.

The Renal Dialysis Unit at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has been reopened to outpatients following a directive from the Minister of Health. The unit was temporarily closed for renovation in May but was partially reopened to patients at an increased cost, leading to public outcry and agitations.

The proposed cost increase from GH¢380 to GH¢765.42 led to the immediate closure of the facility, prompting internal investigations into the charging of patients without parliamentary approval. The closure also resulted in Parliament summoning the Minister of Health over the matter.

Also, concerns have been raised by patients about potential breakdowns due to the high number of patients seeking care. The management of the hospital has also appealed to Parliament to promptly approve new fees for the renal unit.

During the closure period, 19 kidney patients tragically lost their lives, highlighting the urgency of addressing the challenges faced by the Renal Dialysis Unit. The hospital's management has called for support from stakeholders and benefactors to prevent a recurrence of the issues that led to the suspension of dialysis services to out-patients.
