South African opposition leader Julius Malema, along with five fellow MPs from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party, faced the repercussions of their actions during President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation address in February. The parliament's powers and privileges committee found them guilty of contempt of parliament for their brazen act of storming the stage during the address, resulting in a one-month suspension without pay from parliamentary duties.

The incident during the address led to a suspension of proceedings as security personnel removed Mr. Malema and the other EFF MPs from the hall. The subsequent decision by the committee mandated that each member must issue a personal apology within the House to the president, the speaker, and the citizens of South Africa. The disruptive actions were deemed to have cast the country in a negative light and necessitated this formal act of contrition.

The suspension of the six MPs, including Julius Malema, is set to extend throughout the entire month of February next year. This means that they will be precluded from attending the president's forthcoming State of the Nation address, scheduled for that month.

In the wake of the hearings, the EFF MPs chose not to partake in the proceedings after their request for a postponement was denied by the committee. Furthermore, Mr. Malema strongly protested against the appointment of advocate Anton Katz as the initiator in the hearing, delivering a vehement statement: “I will not be persecuted by a white man.”
