Yobe Governor, Buni's Convoy Attacked By Boko Haram; Six Security Personnel Injured

Over the weekend, a concerning event unfolded as suspected Boko Haram fighters reportedly carried out a revenge attack, targeting the convoy of Mai Mala Buni, the governor of Yobe State in Nigeria. As the governor was returning from Maiduguri in Northeast Borno State to Damaturu, the state capital of Yobe, his convoy came under attack, resulting in casualties among his security details. While the governor escaped unharmed, unfortunately, an undisclosed number of security personnel were killed and six were critically injured during the assault. The incident led to a confrontation, with troops engaged in a shootout with the suspected terrorists. Eventually, the troops succeeded in overpowering the attackers, forcing them to retreat.

This attack came in the wake of targeted military operations in the Sambisa Forest area, where troops, supported by Nigeria Air Force (NAF) fighter jets, continued their pursuit of the terrorists. These actions led to a significant impact, resulting in the reported deaths of over 138 fighters from the insurgent group, with 122 terrorists arrested and 69 captives rescued during a rigorous nine-hour operation. The ongoing counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism efforts represent a critical strategy in the region, especially considering the movement of extremist elements to neighboring countries such as Niger and Chad.


The Director of the Defence Media Operations, Maj Gen Edward Buba, emphasized the strategic focus of the military's operations, targeting the leaders of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) affiliates. These extremist factions have been known to launch attacks not only within Nigeria but also across the borders, impacting regions adjoining Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. Gen Buba expressed optimism about the outcomes of the ongoing counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism efforts, stressing the continued infliction of heavy casualties on the terrorists and urging their surrender to avoid further devastation.

Furthermore, President Bola Tinubu has signaled the need for a proactive approach by the military and urged collective support from stakeholders to tackle the challenges of terrorism while striving to restore peace and stability to the Northeast region. Speaking at a recent book launch event at Babcock University in Abuja, President Tinubu highlighted the prolonged struggle with terrorism in the Northeast and emphasized the significance of knowledge, understanding, and collective efforts in overcoming these challenges.

President Tinubu underscored the pivotal role of airpower in modern warfare, particularly in counter-terrorism operations. He emphasized the critical importance of air assets such as drones, surveillance aircraft, and precision weapons in intelligence gathering, disrupting terrorist networks, and providing indispensable support to ground forces. President Tinubu also stressed the need for collaborative partnerships and a deeper comprehension of the complexities of terrorism, with the aim of bolstering collective endeavors to comprehensively address the threat.

Since 2009, Boko Haram has been responsible for significant attacks on communities in an effort to establish Islamic states in Nigeria's northern regions, including Yobe, Adamawa, and Borno states. Notably, their actions have targeted churches, mosques, and vital social infrastructure, leading to the destruction of schools, markets, telecommunication equipment, and agricultural lands.
