During the presentation of the 2024 budget statement on Wednesday, November 15, Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, unveiled significant strides in healthcare, particularly focusing on kidney transplantation services and infrastructure development aimed at enhancing medical capabilities across the nation.

Minister Ofori-Atta announced the successful training of a team of local Ghanaian doctors to administer kidney transplantation services within the country. By doing so, the government aims to alleviate the burden of dialysis, providing cost-effective and locally available transplant services, marking a transformative leap for medical care in Ghana. Moreover, the imminent commissioning of a 100-bed ultramodern Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital will significantly bolster the capacity to facilitate kidney transplantation services, further empowering the nation's healthcare infrastructure.

Advancements at Korle Bu and Nationwide Healthcare Initiatives
Highlighting the commendable progress at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Minister Ofori-Atta underscored the acquisition of a new MRI Chiller System for Radiology, enhancing the hospital's imaging capabilities. Additionally, the hospital stands as the sole manufacturing site for Hypertonic Saline, a critical resource for surgeries and Hyponatremia treatment, showcasing the significant strides made in locally producing essential medical supplies.
Further, the Minister accentuated the completion of various pivotal healthcare projects across different regions, including the construction of health facilities and the modernization of hospitals. Notable achievements include the construction of 5 health facilities in Elubo, Bogoso, Mpohor, Nsuaem, and Wassa Dunkwa, as well as upgrades and modernization efforts at Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital, Kibi District Hospital, Aburi, and Atibie Hospitals. Moreover, the successful renegotiation of the La General Hospital project contract terms allows for its funding through the national budget, signifying the government's commitment to bolstering healthcare infrastructure. The imminent return of the contractor to the project site marks a significant step forward in advancing this critical healthcare facility.
National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Membership
Regarding the active membership of the National Health Insurance Authority, Minister Ofori-Atta revealed that as of the end of September, active members stood at 14.4 million, encompassing 45 percent of the targeted population of 20 million. This proportionate representation signifies a substantial coverage level, extending crucial healthcare access to a significant portion of the population.
