NHIS Launches Electronic Claims Payments For Service Providers

(Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye)

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) continues to forge new frontiers in healthcare by introducing a groundbreaking digital payment system, further diversifying its array of pioneering policies aimed at informing and empowering stakeholders in the health delivery sector.

This latest innovation enables service providers to electronically submit claims, which are then verified and electronically paid by the Authority within the stipulated 90-day period, as mandated by law. Over 95% of claims are currently submitted electronically, significantly reducing processing delays and ensuring prompt payment, thus guaranteeing seamless access to healthcare for NHIS members.

In addition to the digital payment system, the NHIA, under the guidance of Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, has introduced the "Sunshine Policy" to enhance transparency. This policy provides real-time updates on the status of claims payments made to NHIS-credentialed healthcare providers, fostering an environment of accountability and open information access for stakeholders and the public.

The "Sunshine Policy" revolutionizes transparency, allowing stakeholders to effortlessly ascertain which facilities have received claims payments, the corresponding amounts, and the specific month(s) for which the claims have been settled. Furthermore, the policy features an accessible filter system categorized for both public and private providers, ensuring widespread access and information transparency.

At the GMA summit, Dr. Okoe Boye urged service providers to serve clients and subscribers diligently, emphasizing the prohibition of illicit charges from patients under the Scheme. Highlighting the substantial monthly payments—an average of not less than 100 million cedis—made to service providers, Dr. Okoe Boye underscored the reciprocal obligation to uphold confidence in the Scheme by fulfilling their part of the commitment.

To access this groundbreaking policy, stakeholders can visit the NHIA website (www.nhis.gov.gh) and select the "claims" section located on the top left corner of the homepage.

Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye's leadership of the NHIA has ushered in a series of remarkable initiatives, characterized by inclusivity and transparency, with the CEO actively engaging at the 65th GMA anniversary in Takoradi, demonstrating a keen commitment to updating Ghana's medical landscape.

The NHIA's relentless pursuit of innovative policies and transparent measures serves as a paradigm for the healthcare industry, setting the stage for enhanced accountability, efficiency, and trust within Ghana's health delivery sector.
