We Lack Vacancies For Fresh Graduates From Tertiary Institutions - Ghana Employers Association

In a recent interview with the media on February 29, 2024, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Employers Association (GEA), Alex Frimpong, shed light on the difficulties that businesses face in accommodating fresh graduates from tertiary institutions.

Frimpong revealed that the current macroeconomic environment has led to limited expansion in businesses, prompting them to focus on maintaining existing resources.

Frimpong emphasized that the lack of job vacancies is not a reflection of the quality of graduates but rather a consequence of businesses' struggles to expand and create new opportunities for employment. He highlighted that many enterprises are not equipped to take on young graduates and provide training, opting instead to seek specific skills to fill immediate roles.

The Ghana Employers Association CEO's remarks were in response to the Ghana Statistical Service's recent report showing high unemployment rates among graduates and individuals with higher education qualifications. The situation has sparked discussions about graduates demanding better working conditions and higher salaries, exacerbating the unemployment challenge.

Frimpong noted that the reluctance to hire is not solely due to high salary expectations from graduates but primarily stems from the lack of available space within businesses for new employees. He underscored that the formal sector is not expanding sufficiently to absorb all graduates entering the workforce.

Echoing similar sentiments, Seth Twum Akwaboah, Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Ghana Industries, emphasized the importance of skills over education levels in the manufacturing sector. Akwaboah emphasized that qualifications such as a PhD do not automatically guarantee specific salary levels or working conditions. Instead, businesses prioritize candidates who possess relevant skills and can contribute effectively to their operations.
