In a recent interview on Peace FM on November 22, 2023, Kate Gyamfua, the National Women’s Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), shed light on the party's considerations for the running mate for NPP's flagbearer in the upcoming 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamdu Bawumia. According to Gyamfua, the party has already made a decision regarding their potential running mate and has communicated their choice to Vice President Bawumia.

Gyamfua emphasized that the selected individual for the role must be a male Member of Parliament (MP) hailing from the Ashanti region. When questioned about the exclusion of non-MPs from aspiring for the position, she drew parallels to the past, referencing the diverse opinions that existed prior to Vice President Bawumia's election. Notably, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially handed over the leadership of the NPP to Bawumia following the November 7 presidential primaries, in accordance with the NPP's constitution.

With regard to the potential candidates for the position of running mate, names that have been mentioned include Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister of Communication, Adutwum Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe, Deputy Finance Minister, and Ejisu MP John Kumah, and Energy Minister Mathew Opoku Prempeh, among others.

During the interview, when questioned about the timing of the running mate's selection and the criteria for the role, Gyamfua clarified that the flagbearer is empowered to appoint his own running mate, implying that he possesses prior knowledge of the party's preferred candidate. She affirmed that the potential running mate is indeed expected to be an MP, specifically emphasizing the importance of the individual being from the Ashanti region.
