"Return To Trimester System Or We Withdraw Our Members" - NAGRAT To GES

(Angel Carbonu, President of NAGRAT,)

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has recently expressed its concerns and threatened to direct its members to take breaks from work if the government does not enter into discussions to revert the academic calendar to the trimester system. This reaction comes in response to the newly released academic calendar for students, which has a significant impact on both the single-track and double-track systems.

Under the current academic calendar, form 2 and form 3 students on the single-track system have already begun their academic year on November 1 and are scheduled to conclude on March 6. On the other hand, form 2 students under the double-track system are expected to commence their academic year on March 8 and continue until May 9. This leaves very little room for teachers to have their well-deserved rest periods.

In an interview with Citi News, the President of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu, emphasized that if the government does not take the necessary steps to return to the trimester system, the association may be forced to withdraw its members. Carbonu expressed frustration with the ongoing confusion surrounding the current academic system, stating that the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) cannot provide a clear timeline for resolving the issues.

To address the challenges faced by the education system, Carbonu suggested a phased approach. He proposed that the government should refrain from admitting 2023/2024 first-year students into any double-track programs, thereby ensuring a gradual transition back to normalcy. By progressively ending double-track admissions, Carbonu believes that by 2026, all schools will operate without the need for the double-track system.

Furthermore, Carbonu emphasized that teachers should not be expected to continue working without adequate rest periods. He stressed the importance of allocating specific periods for teachers to take breaks, without having to rely on management decisions. It is clear that NAGRAT seeks to advocate for the well-being of its members and the overall improvement of the education system.

In summary, NAGRAT's concerns revolve around the need to address the challenges posed by the current academic calendar and advocate for a return to the trimester system. The association recognizes the importance of providing teachers with adequate rest periods and calls for a gradual phasing out of the double-track system. By addressing these concerns, it is hoped that the education system in Ghana can operate more effectively and efficiently.
