Judgment Of Aisha Huang Shows We Are Not Serious About The "Galamsey" Fight - Inusah Feseini

In a recent discussion at the "JoyNews National Dialogue of Illegal Mining" on December 4, former Member of Parliament for Tamale-Central, Inusah Fuseini, voiced concerns about the country's approach to combating illegal mining. His remarks centered around the recent sentencing of Aisha Huang, a figure known for illegal mining activities, exhibiting skepticism about the nation's resolve to eradicate this issue.

Expressing his reservations, Fuseini pointed to Aisha Huang's case, emphasizing how the sentence handed to her—four and a half years in prison and a GH₵48,000 fine—highlights a lack of seriousness in addressing the illegal mining problem. He contrasted this with the initial arrest under a legal framework that imposed a more substantial penalty before emphasizing the inadequacy of the current sentencing regime. As a former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, he drew attention to the realization during his tenure that the existing sentencing measures were insufficient as a deterrent, leading to the introduction of legal amendments.

Furthermore, Mr. Fuseini underscored the symbolism behind using the outdated mining regime in the court's decision, interpreting it as a worrying sign, and suggesting a tolerance for this detrimental activity. He stressed the global perspective, framing environmental crimes as offenses against humanity, underscoring that they cannot be justified under the veneer of mineral exploitation.

To further accentuate the gravity of the situation, he shared a distressing anecdote of a woman who suffered a stillborn birth due to the adverse effects of living in an illegal mining community. His impassioned plea conveyed a sense of urgency, highlighting the necessity for action to prevent a looming crisis, one that imperils not only the country's economy but also its very existence.

In essence, Mr. Fuseini's message pointed to the need for a more resolute stance in addressing illegal mining, aligning with the determination demonstrated by other nations that have faced similar challenges. He left a stark warning, urging everyone present to recognize the existential threat posed by the continuance of this issue.
